Does turning off Live Photos save space?

It depends where you turn them off. Disabling playback is reversible; reclaiming space from existing Live Photos requires keeping a still and removing the original.

Keep Live off in Camera

Enable Live Photo under Settings → Camera → Preserve Settings, then turn Live off in Camera. Labels and placement vary by iOS version. Apple’s Live Photo settings guide also explains the reversible playback toggle in Photos.

Convert existing photos

Live Photo Cleaner+ scans your library and lets you keep motion or convert selected photos to stills. Review one at a time or select several in Bulk Mode.

Converted originals go to Recently Deleted. Check your stills, then permanently remove the originals or let them expire. Follow the conversion guide.

How much space will I save?

Savings depend on the original video, replacement image, and how much was stored locally. With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage, local savings may differ from estimates.

Compare your device’s storage before and after converting a small group. Check the replacements, finish the Recently Deleted step, and let Photos sync before comparing totals. Results vary by library.

Can I change my mind?

Recover the Live original while it remains in Recently Deleted. You may then have both it and the still replacement. After permanent deletion, the app cannot restore motion. Apple’s recovery guide.
